Kitchen Islands

Kitchen islands are small mobile or stationary storage cabinets and/or counter tops. Kitchen islands come in a variety of styles and finishes to choose from such as, wood, granite, and metal tops. Some have plain wood or enamel finishes, and many more other styles and colors to choose from. Some have wicker basket drawers while others have full cabinets and shelves. Some have a butcher block for holding your knives built right in to them or even a wine rack. Some merely open shelves underneath the worktop.

The design of a kitchen island is pretty basically either a square or rectangular shape with cabinets, shelves, or racks underneath the worktop. The cart style kitchen islands come in the folding/unfolding styles for portability or the solid one-piece cabinet and shelves styles. The mobile kitchen islands have wheels for easy movement.

Then there are the solid, built into the floor type of kitchen islands. Many times these extra counter top spaces also are used to hold a dishwasher or have a grill/griddle and/or range top for cooking installed into the top of the kitchen island.

Many times people will have a pendant light installed over the stationary kitche isalnd, or have installed where they would need it the pendant light for use when the mobile kitchen island is rolled underneath of it.

If you are skilled in woodworking then you could design and make your own kitchen island with little expense. The kitchen is often the most populated room in the house, other than the bathroom of course. A kitchen island is great way to make your favorite gathering spot a gathering place that you and all of your family friends can enjoy even better. A kitchen island can provide an additional workspace, eating space, or a space for throwing your stuff down when you walk in the door.

Before you go to the store to look at the commercially available kitchen islands, you may want to think about building your own island. The commercially available kitchen Islands can be very expensive and can’t be customized to match your kitchen décor. Instead of buying a kitchen island and paying a lot of money, try building one yourself.

By building your own kitchen island, you will save money, and you can customize the island the way you want it. If you have the right tools and the time and patience, building an island can be a worthwhile project.
