Dishwashers
Nothing makes the onerous task of cleaning up the dirty dishes easier than an automatic dishwashing machine. Statistics show that at least half the homes in America have one of these labor saving devices installed. Besides the time saved in scrubbing them out by hand you can use sterilizing formulas to make sure your dishes are bacteria free. The principle of the dishwasher is simple in that it uses spinning high pressure jets of soapy water to knock food particles off the dishes.
The older style dishwashers still needed you to pre-rinse the dishes before placing them in the dishwashing racks and this somewhat negated the water saving benefits of having a dishwashing machine. Newer models however, have been developed which use a better detergent formula and sprayer head designs which virtually eliminate the need for this pre-soak operation. While the older style dishwashers were set to predetermined time settings to run, modern dishwashing machines now use special "soil sensors" that gauge the cloudiness of the water to determine when the dishes have been cleaned and automatically shut off when the water becomes clear.
While some of the best dishwashers are built right into the kitchen cabinets, you can get smaller portable dishwasher models that can be moved into the kitchen for use and then rolled back into a storage area when not needed.
One of the major resource savings with dishwashers is that they use much less water than doing the dishes by hand and they do it quicker. They are very power efficient in the actual running of the machine and the greatest power consumption is usually in heating the water. Most modern dishwashers have an extra heating element in them that increases the heat of the water to just below the steaming point as this is the most effective temperature for powering off food particles and stains.
Most dishwashing machines are built very durably and it is not just a product of the advertising agents that inspired the lonely Maytag repairman. In the event you do need to find parts to repair your dishwasher, companies like Bosch guarantee that all their replacement parts are factory original so you have no fear of getting inferior parts from outside manufacturers. Other major manufacturers of quality dishwashers and other kitchen appliances are General Electric and the Whirlpool Company.
When you are choosing a new dishwasher for your home, it is best to check the placement of the spraying arms in relation to any large or oddly shaped cooking or serving dishes you may have. Taking them to the store to see how they fit into the washing chamber to see if they block the spray from the jets may save you having to wash it out by hand ever time you use it.
